Hmmm... I think it's a little more nuanced than that. I don't think that podcasters are trying to replace novelists.
Instead, think of podcasts as a modern evolution of radio plays. Or going back even further, it's the modern equivalent of the town storyteller, or better yet, the traveling storyteller.
Think of us as a society that's devolving. We're too lazy to read. We just want someone to tell us the story. Or think of it as retro. We're tired of listening to the same songs and the same talk radio, so instead, we listen to podcasts on our long commutes.
Then again, this is a knee jerk reaction to your idea. You could be right :)
Right? I listen to music radio on my commute in to work- and there are so many adverts about listen to my podcast on the Iheartradio app. Some sound really interesting but I just don't have room for another app on my phone which is where I need it.
